The Shocking Truth About Fluoride: What’s in Your Water and Toothpaste?

Food for Thought Newsletter - Issue 015

IN THIS ISSUE:

  • The shocking origins of man-made fluoride and its use in water and dental products
  • Recent studies and rulings revealing fluoride's health risks
  • Steps to reduce fluoride exposure in your daily life

Here are the basics...

Have you heard the latest about fluoride? This one is a doozy, and sometimes, I don’t even know what to say, but I’m going to try to make this concise yet informative. I’m also going to make sure that everything I include is truthful to the extent of my research. From there, you are welcome to make your own decision.

First, do you know what is in man-made fluoride (the stuff you get from your dentist, what’s in your drinking water, and in toothpaste)? Do you know how it’s made?

You aren’t going to believe this.

It’s a chemical by-product of waste from aluminum, steel, cement, phosphate, and NUCLEAR WASTE.

Jeez.

I always thought fluoride was a natural product. Which it is - but that’s not what’s being used commercially.

((Deep breaths, Tandy))

Here we go...

Food for thought separator

The Fluoride Flop

Late this fall, a California judge went head-to-head with the EPA and ruled that they must do something about fluoride in drinking water - and sooner than later. He said fluoride in water poses an “unreasonable risk to our kids

This ruling was a long time coming because somehow several of the studies being used in the ruling received a gag order.

Makes you wonder …. Why hide the findings of the studies?

How about we start at the beginning…

Have you ever wondered why there is a warning on tubes of toothpaste saying to call poison control if too much toothpaste is ingested? Did you even know there’s a warning to keep toothpaste out of reach of children under the age of six?

What do you think is the purpose of the warning? Are they worried kids will ingest too much mint? Or fake strawberry flavoring?

Nope.

It’s fluoride.

Know what you’re supposed to do if you think someone somehow ingested too much toothpaste? - Call poison control!

Yet - let’s put it freely in water, give it to everyone who ever steps foot in the dentist's office, and even give our kids tablets of it to “strengthen their teeth”. But if they eat too much toothpaste they may have ingested too much.

Man.

Something isn’t adding up, is it?

But wait … there’s more!

Did you know that it is common knowledge in the medical community that fluoride can cause cognitive issues in kids? Not just that it can, but that it’s known to.

This substance that’s heralded as a hero in strengthening teeth and reducing cavities is also being accused of causing:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Lower IQ
  • Contribute to developmental delays
  • Kidney and liver damage
  • Numerous health issues

Now, I want to set the record straight about something. Yes, fluoride is found naturally and even if we completely eradicated all artificial fluoride, it would still be found in some drinking water. That’s TRUE!

However … and this is a big one…

It’s trace amounts that are found naturally. In some instances, it’s barely measurable. That’s a far cry from the current city drinking water.

And the natural stuff isn’t a byproduct of nuclear waste.

Studies On Fluoride

Here are some studies if you want to research further.

Harvard did a study in 2010 - it was an analysis of 27 different studies. The conclusion? They found a direct link between fluoride and cognitive decline in children

There was another study in 2019 that concluded that fluoride is a neurotoxicant that reduces measurable intelligence in humans and is toxic to nerves.

Then a Cochrane review this October released the conclusion that adding fluoride to drinking water may have fewer health benefits than believed in the past - and only a slight reduction in tooth decay in baby teeth.

Folks, this is terrible. Consider just drinking water for a minute. Not even toothpaste, the fluoride you get from the dentist in your fillings and swished on your teeth, and everywhere else this stuff is peddled.

Just water.

Consider a baby whose mama is unable to breastfeed. What does the mama do? She does the best she can and makes bottles of baby formula - that is laced with fluoride.

We all buy glass water bottles so we don’t leach plastic into our water - but what about the chemicals IN your water?

You get the picture.

Man.

So what’s a person to do?

I’m not a doctor, dentist, or health professional so I’m just sharing what WE did - I’m not advising you. Mkay?

  • I bought the book Cure Tooth Decay. I’m reading it now and it’s enlightening. So good!

  • I made sure we were consuming WAY less sugar - I’m shooting for no sugar - at least for a time of healing.

  • I buy toothpaste that does not have fluoride from Azure Standard. They have several options. We really like the stuff from Desert Essence.

  • Since we have well water, I don’t worry about our water but if I had city water, I’d be getting drinking water from a country friend for sure. I have no idea how to buy water that doesn’t have fluoride.

  • Many cities have already outlawed the use of fluoride in their drinking water. If you’re up for it, you can research and take on the battle with your city.

I’d love to hear your input - did you learn anything in this newsletter? What would you like to learn more about? What were the points that were most surprising for you? Will you be changing your dental hygiene habits because of what you read? I would love to hear from you!

I’ve always been concerned about fluoride and chlorine in city drinking water, but I was thinking that it was unlikely that there is much fluoridation going on in Alaska. Boy was I wrong! These communities in Alaska are adding fluoride to drinking water:
Anchorage Borough, fluoridated: Alaska Brands WTS, Anchorage, Girdwood, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base; non-fluoridated: the other 114 public water systems.
Bethel Census Area, fluoridated: Bethel City Subdivision, Bethel Heights, Bethel Water Haulers, Toksook Bay; non-fluoridated: the other 67 public water systems.
Dillingham Census Area, fluoridated: Kanakanak Hospital; non-fluoridated: the other 15 public water systems.
Fairbanks North Star, fluoridated: Eielson Air Force Base; non-fluoridated: the other 49 public water systems.
Kodiak Island, fluoridated: US Coast Guard Base; non-fluoridated: the other 10 public water systems.
Nome Census Area, fluoridated: Anvil Mountain Correctional Center, Moonlight Water Del. Nome, Nome; non-fluoridated: the other 17 public water systems.
North Slope Borough, fluoridated: Barrow, Water Services (unclear who this is); non-fluoridated: the other 18 public water systems.
Northwest Artic, fluoridated: Buckland, Kotzebue; non-fluoridated: the other 12 public water systems.
Sitka Borough, fluoridated: Sitka; non-fluoridated: Starrigavan Campgound.
Southeast Fairbanks, fluoridated: Fort Greely; non-fluoridated: 16 other public water systems.
Wrangell-Petersburg, fluoridated: Petersburg; non-fluoridated: Wrangell and four other public water systems.
Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, fluoridated: Ft. Yukon; non-fluoridated: 31 other public water systems.
