SEEDS WE’RE PLANTING IN APRIL FOR OUR ALASKA GARDEN

It’s APRIL! The days are getting so long and it’s finally starting to warm up! Yesterday we got 4″ of snow at the farm but I expect that will all melt away in the next couple of days. My favorite kind of snow is the kind that doesn’t overstay its welcome. ((grin))

We have a few little bare spots on the ground where we plowed this winter but the rest of the farm still has a blanket of snow that’s several feet deep. However, we know it’s melting because we can see more and more of the trees in the orchard each week!

The sunroom is filling up with plants – most are germinating perfectly which makes things crazy fun! I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work in there on sunny afternoons. It gets so warm and the soil in the pots smells amazing when it warms up!

We aren’t done planting yet, though. We still have some seeds to sow in April and May that need to get a head start inside before facing whatever summer brings us outside. (Please, Lord, can we have a beautiful and SUNNY summer? AMEN!)

Here is what we are planting in April:

  • Calendula
  • Nasturtiums
  • Marigolds
  • Bachelor Buttons
  • Cantaloupe
  • Good King Henry (If you don’t know what it is – check it out – it’s SUPER fun!)
  • Kohlrabi
  • Borage
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower (this year, just for fun, I bought so many colors! Our freezer will be like a rainbow!)
  • Cabbage
  • Cilantro
  • Cucumber
  • Squash (winter and summer squash)
  • Pumpkin

As I look at this list I realize that this is going to FILL my sunroom to bursting! I absolutely LOVE having the jungle inside but it’s also so refreshing when everything gets moved to its permanent home, outside, in June.

What are you planting in April? Did I forget anything? Can’t wait to hear all about it!
