We are really excited to offer this class series Keeping Dairy Goats in Alaska. The series is broken into two classes – attend one or both, whatever works best for you! Price is per person. Children under 2 are free.

We do have limited seating for this class since this is a hands-on class with live goats and there is no live feed.

Keeping Dairy Goats in Alaska is taking place at the Big Lake Lions Club on May 5. 2023 and is being taught by Suzy Crosby, a longtime valley goat farmer. Suzy and her husband Mike own Cottonwood Creek Farm, and have been supplying raw milk in the form of goat shares for 20 years.

Raising Dairy Goats in Alaska – Part 1: 10 AM – Noon
This beginner class features information for those considering getting started with dairy goats, including: 

  • How to choose your goats
  • Health concerns to be aware of
  • Setting up your infrastructure (housing, fencing, feeders, & waterers)
  • Goat nutritional needs
  • Goat-o-nomics 101
  • Herd shares
  • Safety & Sanitation
  • Things you can do with your bounty of fresh milk (with samples!)
  • Plus, a list of handy goat resources

Raising Dairy Goats in Alaska – Part 2: 1:00 – 3 pm
Taking it from head knowledge to hands-on where you learn to: 

  • Handle and lead a goat
  • Milk a goat
  • Trim feet
  • Give supplements
  • Critique confirmation
  • Plus you get to learn how to make kefir and chevre, then make a special treat with chevre.
