SUMMARY:ALASKA ORCHARD MASTERCLASS
DESCRIPTION:In the Alaska Orchard Masterclass\, you will learn all aspects of creating\, planting\, and maintaining your Alaska orchard. This class will be an interactive class in our 4-acre orchard. We will be meeting Saturday\, June 3\, from 1-4 pm at Common Ground Alaska Farm in Big Lake. This is an in-person class. \nIf you’re considering planting an orchard for yourself\, for your neighborhood\, or even for the public\, this is the perfect class for you! Imagine growing your own fruits and berries and preserving them for the winter. You’ll save money\, time\, and you’ll know every aspect of the food your family is eating. No need to worry about chemicals\, waxes\, or anything else. \nOrchards take some thought and time to set up but once you have it planted\, the care is minimal and the rewards are GREAT! \nWe started planting our orchard 11 years ago and we’ve learned so much – now it’s time to share our tips\, tricks\, and what-not-to-dos with you! We lost thousands of dollars buying the wrong plants\, not being properly prepared\, and using bad techniques. Learn from our successes and mistakes and save yourself time and money! \nThe following topics will be covered in this class taught by Gene Hogate of Common Ground Alaska: \nDESIGN\n+ Microclimate\n+ Slope\n+ Choosing plants\n+ Soil\n… and so much more! \nIMPLEMENT\n+ Set Up\n+ Planting\n+ Watering system\n+ Weed Control\n+ Caring for your new plants \nMAINTAIN\n+ Winter Care\n+ Spring prep\n+ Insect control\n+ Disease Prevention\n+ Pruning\n+ Handling suckers \nTour the orchard with Gene and explore YOUR possibilities! We can’t wait to hear all about your dream orchard and help you get started!

SUMMARY:ALASKA HOMESTEAD KIDS – MARCH 27 GARDENING CLASS
DESCRIPTION:We were talking the other evening and couldn’t help but wonder – why only have classes for adults? There are so many super fun aspects to homesteading that we know kids would LOVE! \nAs a result of that conversation\, we’re launching our Homestead Kids series of classes. We’re starting with our roots\, gardening\, of course! This class is taking place on March 27 from 1-4 pm at the Big Lake Lions Club. \nIn this three-hour gardening class\, your kids will learn all about healthy soil\, (including all the crazy bugs that work to make our soil healthy)\, they will even make edible soil layers. They will also get to plant several different seeds to take home and nurture. AND\, we even have a worm farmer coming to show how worms help our soil — and he’s bringing some worms for the kids to see! \nIt’s going to be a great class – super informative for kids of all ages! \nWe have geared this class for kindergarten – 6th grade\, but we do believe older kids will enjoy it as well. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: The snack does contain dairy. We can have a gluten-free version\, so if your child requires GF\, please indicate that in your notes at checkout.
