SUMMARY:GARDENING IN ALASKA
DESCRIPTION:Let’s face it\, gardening in Alaska has its challenges like cooler summers and soil\, long daylight hours\, and such a short growing season. Whether you’re just getting started\, you’re frustrated with your current garden situation\, or you just want to learn what more you can grow\, this class is going to be incredible! \nValley Master Gardener Carol Hepler has graciously agreed to teach this year’s gardening class – and I could not be more excited for us all! Carol is a WEALTH of knowledge. She has been gardening in Alaska for as long as I can remember and — here’s the kicker — I’ve NEVER asked her a question that she couldn’t answer either from experience or from her interactions with other people. \nHonestly\, Carol is one of the wisest and most productive gardeners I’ve ever met. We are so honored to have her come teach our class and answer all of our gardening questions. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced gardener\, you’ll learn from Carol. \nThe gardening class takes place on Saturday March 2 from 10 am – noon at Bear Booch at 3275 W Coghlan Cir in Wasilla. \nKombucha and Genesis Coffee Lab coffee will be available for purchase but you are welcome to bring your own drinks as well. Snacks will be provided. \nIn this interactive class we will discuss: \n\nThe challenges of gardening in Alaska (short seasons\, cool soil temps\, long daylight hours\, and microclimates)\nWhat grows well in Alaska (Variety\, variety\, variety!)\nTransplanting vs. direct sowing\nGrowing in Greenhouses vs. Outdoors\nPests\nSoil Amendments\nPLUS she will be avaiable to answer all of our questions.\n\nIf you’d like to know more about Carol\, here is her bio:\nGardening has been a lifelong happening for me. I grew up helping in the garden as a child in Northern Iowa. After getting married\, we moved around and experienced gardening in different climates: Southern Illinois\, North Carolina\, Georgia\, Bethel\, Alaska\, and finally\, the MatSu Valley\, where we have been for over 30 years. \nMy husband and I always striven to provide as much of our own homegrown food for our family of 6 children as possible. We wanted good food\, free of pesticides\, herbicides\, and chemicals. I have always enjoyed “putting food by” for the winter months. \nI enjoy entering crops in the Fair and putting together garden displays. I am also part of the Crops judging team at the Fair. \nMy husband and I spend many hours pouring over seed catalogs\, dreaming of next season. We grow all of our own bedding plants\, save seeds of many things and make up our own organic fertilizer. \nMy favorite thing to grow is probably pumpkins. I enjoy having enough pumpkins for my grandchildren to each pick one to carve as well as have them to eat. \nThis class is going to be amazing – be sure to get your tickets soon!

SUMMARY:WINTER SOURDOUGH CLASS
DESCRIPTION:Cooking with sourdough can be daunting — heck\, keeping sourdough alive and happy can seem like a lot but it’s actually really simple and it’s a whole lot of fun. Plus\, sourdough is an incredible superfood that will enhance your family’s diet tremendously. \n*Note\, we use a heritage wheat grain that is pre-hybridized (pre-1950s) for our sourdough that has not been modernized so we can easily digest it without inflammation although I have an autoimmune disease and my daughter has a chronic\, hereditary illness. Your starter will also be made with this particular wheat. We make no claims that this sourdough will not cause issues with anyone who is sensitive to gluten. \nIn this sourdough class you will learn everything I know about sourdough including how to store it\, feed it\, use the discard\, and especially how to cook with it. You’ll also learn the health benefits of cooking with sourdough. \nSaturday\, February 3\, 2024 from 10 am – noon at Bear Booch in Wasilla. Address: 3275 W Coghlan Circle\, Wasilla \nKombucha and Genesis Coffee Lab coffee will be available for purchase but you are welcome to bring your own drinks as well. Snacks will be provided. \nThe Homestead Alaska Sourdough class is taught by Tandy Hogate\, lifelong food preservationist. The first half of the class will be learning about the benefits of sourdough and how to care for it. The second half will be learning how to work with your starter and ways to use up the discard. \nClass Agenda \n\nWhat to do with your sourdough starter when you get home\nHow and when to feed your starter\nWhat to do with your starter if you need a break\nCooking with sourdough starter\nUsing the discard rather than throwing it out\nBONUS: How to use your extra sourdough (or discard) to help keep your barnyard healthy!\nHealth benefits of sourdough\, including why those of us who have health issues can eat sourdough when we steer completely clear of anything made with modern wheat.\n\nYou will also take home some sourdough starter so you can get started on your very own sourdough right away!

SUMMARY:ALASKA ORCHARD MASTERCLASS
DESCRIPTION:In the Alaska Orchard Masterclass\, you will learn all aspects of creating\, planting\, and maintaining your Alaska orchard. This class will be an interactive class in our 4-acre orchard. We will be meeting Saturday\, June 3\, from 1-4 pm at Common Ground Alaska Farm in Big Lake. This is an in-person class. \nIf you’re considering planting an orchard for yourself\, for your neighborhood\, or even for the public\, this is the perfect class for you! Imagine growing your own fruits and berries and preserving them for the winter. You’ll save money\, time\, and you’ll know every aspect of the food your family is eating. No need to worry about chemicals\, waxes\, or anything else. \nOrchards take some thought and time to set up but once you have it planted\, the care is minimal and the rewards are GREAT! \nWe started planting our orchard 11 years ago and we’ve learned so much – now it’s time to share our tips\, tricks\, and what-not-to-dos with you! We lost thousands of dollars buying the wrong plants\, not being properly prepared\, and using bad techniques. Learn from our successes and mistakes and save yourself time and money! \nThe following topics will be covered in this class taught by Gene Hogate of Common Ground Alaska: \nDESIGN\n+ Microclimate\n+ Slope\n+ Choosing plants\n+ Soil\n… and so much more! \nIMPLEMENT\n+ Set Up\n+ Planting\n+ Watering system\n+ Weed Control\n+ Caring for your new plants \nMAINTAIN\n+ Winter Care\n+ Spring prep\n+ Insect control\n+ Disease Prevention\n+ Pruning\n+ Handling suckers \nTour the orchard with Gene and explore YOUR possibilities! SUMMARY:ALASKA HOMESTEAD KIDS – MARCH 27 GARDENING CLASS
DESCRIPTION:We were talking the other evening and couldn’t help but wonder – why only have classes for adults? There are so many super fun aspects to homesteading that we know kids would LOVE! \nAs a result of that conversation\, we’re launching our Homestead Kids series of classes. We’re starting with our roots\, gardening\, of course! This class is taking place on March 27 from 1-4 pm at the Big Lake Lions Club. \nIn this three-hour gardening class\, your kids will learn all about healthy soil\, (including all the crazy bugs that work to make our soil healthy)\, they will even make edible soil layers. They will also get to plant several different seeds to take home and nurture. AND\, we even have a worm farmer coming to show how worms help our soil — and he’s bringing some worms for the kids to see! \nIt’s going to be a great class – super informative for kids of all ages! \nWe have geared this class for kindergarten – 6th grade\, but we do believe older kids will enjoy it as well. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: The snack does contain dairy. We can have a gluten-free version\, so if your child requires GF\, please indicate that in your notes at checkout.
